Portas da Cidade

Portas da Cidade – Datadas de 1783, a sua localização inicial estava a escassos metros a nascente, mas, no século XX, no início da década de 50 foram demolidas e reconstruidas no lugar atual.
É uma construção em pedra basáltica, composta por três arcos, sendo o central o maior, composto por alguns elementos barrocos, as armas de Portugal e do Município de Ponta Delgada.
Por estas portas passaram várias personalidades, reis e presidentes de república, como: D. Pedro I do Brasil, D. Carlos e D. Amélia, Alberto I e Alberto II, Príncipes do Mónaco, Reis de Espanha, D. João Carlos e D. Sofia, e Presidentes da República, de Craveiro Lopes, a Américo Thomaz, de Mário Soares a Cavaco Silva.
Ponta Delgada ofereceu uma réplica das Portas da Cidade, em tamanho real, à Cidade-Irmã de Fall River, nos Estados Unidos da América.

City Gates – Built in 1783, its initial location was at scarce meters east of the actual site. In the 20th century, in the early 1950s, the gates were demolished and rebuilt in the present place.
This is a basalt stone construction, with three arches, being the central one the largest of them. The structure has some baroque elements, the arms of Portugal and of the Municipality of Ponta Delgada.
Several personalities went by these gates such as Kings and Presidents of the Republic: D. Pedro I of Brazil, D. Carlos and D. Amélia, Alberto I and Albert II, Princes of Monaco, the kings of Spain, D. João Carlos and D. Sofia, and Presidents of the Republic, from Craveiro Lopes, to Américo Thomaz, Mário Soares and Cavaco Silva.
Ponta Delgada offered a full-sized replica of the City Gates to the city of Fall River in the United States.
