Igreja Matriz de São Sebastião

Igreja de São Sebastião – A igreja Matriz de Ponta Delgada é um dos monumentos ex-líbris da cidade. Nela sobressaem os pórticos manuelinos e barrocos, a talha dourada, que reveste as suas naves, capelas e altares.
Do século XVIII ao século XX foi remodelada várias vezes, ganhando a imagem atual.
A igreja de São Sebastião é guardiã de um notável tesouro, com peças de arte sacra, estatuária, ourivesaria e paramentos, fazendo parte deste último conjunto duas dalmáticas e duas casulas, do século XIV.
No século XIX, um rico comerciante de Ponta Delgada, de nome António Joaquim Nunes da Silva, ofereceu à cidade um relógio que foi colocado no cimo da torre, e que ainda hoje é o regulador horário das gentes de Ponta Delgada.

Estátua de Padre Serrão – Peça em calcário, de arte fúnebre, que se encontrava na campa que guarda os seus restos mortais do padre, e que foi transferida para o adro da Igreja Matriz. O padre Serrão era natural de Palmela e foi compositor e maestro muito popular na citada igreja.

In the 19th century, a rich merchant from Ponta Delgada, named António Joaquim Nunes da Silva offered the city a clock that was placed on top of the church tower that became the hourly regulator of Ponta Delgada.

Statue of Father Serrão - This piece of limestone funeral art was in the grave of the father, but was transferred to the churchyard of São Sebastião. Father Serrão was born in Palmela and was a very popular composer and conductor of the church of São Sebastião.
